Scripture Twisting

I read an article recently that did a poor job at explaining what Jesus meant when He said He would return "soon". It was stunning that this Catholic author spent that many words (approximately 5000) arguing that "soon" does not mean "soon". Somehow, according to this author, "soon" means "eventually". In other words, the word is so vague that we need to accept the fact that "soon" means the opposite of "soon". I truly hope he re-reads what he wrote.

There are good explanations of those passages available, and they do not need to stretch the definition of the word "soon" in what they say. If we remember that these are the words of God, then we will be hesitant to twist them into some unrecognizable definition that makes us comfortable, but does nothing to enlighten others as to what God is saying to us.

If you ever hear someone seeking to explain Scripture and that person puts an effort into saying that Scripture does not mean what it clearly says, then you should be listening to someone else. The wonderful thing about being Catholic is that we never have to fear truth. Whether that is in the Traditions of the Church, the spoken revelations, or the written Scriptures, God's word is always true, and it will always fit faithfully into a coherent whole. Let us, with joy, thank God for His wonderful truth, and ask Him to help us know what it really means (and not what faithless people want it to mean).
