What happens when the majority of the world rejects truth? What happens when the majority of the world accepts the vile lies of the devil? What happens when the majority of the world moves from a general persecution of the faithful to a specific attack on the faithful? It is always the same: the world works to push the faithful out of society. The world does not want faithful Catholics as leaders (though, compromised and apostate Catholics are just fine as can be seen throughout Washington DC); it does not want faithful Catholics in any high positions: doctors, scientists, military, economists, etc.
When this happens, it is painful for those faithful who believe that they are called to positions like these. I speak with many of them on a regular basis. They suffer because they want to do good, but realize that the only way they can be a part of many of these institutions is if they are disobedient to God. Some seek, fervently, to find ways to remain in their callings without sinning, but it is not uncommon for them to give up.
We cannot, however, look only at what the effect is for us. Yes, we may be saddened, and, yes, we may even be harmed (physically, emotionally, mentally, financially, etc.). Yet, though we may not like it, we are called to suffer for the sake of the faith. Any Catholic who compromises his faith in order to keep a job is not living in the grace of God (and thus, just in case you do not understand what that means, is going to Hell unless he repents). When the world tells us to disobey God (in any way at all) there is no justification for obeying the world.
Thus, as we get forced out of the public sphere and many are ending up having to find new ways to serve God and provide for their families, we must recognize that our Lord is not unable to fix this. In fact, He is fully active in this. Although we are not allowed to remove ourselves from the world by our own choice, when the world throws us out (because we do not follow its evil ways) it means that God is giving the world enough rope to hang itself.
Catholics are the salt of the earth and the light of the world; when we are removed from the public sphere, its end is near. If there is no one to preserve the world from destruction or to give it the light of truth, destruction is soon to come. The world cannot continue for long without the grace that God communicates to the world through us. It will eventually destroy itself. Yes, we and our children may have to suffer in the process, but that is our calling, is it not? We suffer with Christ so that the world can learn from its mistakes and more people can find salvation.
When this all comes to an ugly end -- whether in our lifetimes, or the lifetimes of our children -- then those who remain faithful will be ready to lead the world into the truth once again. Parents: teach your children the truth and never, never, never, compromise that truth. May God have mercy upon us.
