Thanksgiving

We had just missed getting hit by another car by inches. I was amazed that he had not run into us it was so close. My friend, who was driving the car I was in, said, "thank God!" with obvious relief. Interestingly, my friend did not really believe in God; at least not any more than a generic idea of a "Santa Claus-like" kindly gentleman who is always nice and never gets involved in people's lives. So I asked him, "do you really mean that?" His response was thouroughly expected: "that's just a saying".

How often do we use the phrase "thank God" and really only mean, "I'm happy"? Few people realize that any vain or flippant reference to God is breaking the second commandment. So, this Thanksgiving, when you say what you are thankful for, make sure that you mean it. Make sure that you are truly thankful for what God has done, and not just for the things themselves. "Blessed be the name of the Lord." Now speak it like you mean it, and say to everyone, "thank God!"
