Renewing Baptismal Vows

When was the last time you went back and re-read your baptismal vows? If you do not know where to find them, here are the ones we use at St. George:

Priest: Do you renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that you will not follow, nor be led by them?

People: I do.

Priest: Will you endeavour to keep God’s holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of your life?

People: I will, God being my helper.

Last Thursday I was in Houston for the Chrism Mass, and all the priests present renewed their priestly vows. Bishop Lopes asked us the questions and we answered together. The renewal of one's vows of baptism is similar in importance and should be done each year (in case you did not know, the laity have what is called the "baptismal priesthood" which is the general priesthood of all the faithful; it is distinct from the ministerial priesthood of the clergy).

At St George, we renew these vows at Mass during the Easter Vigil and on Easter Sunday. That means this is coming up in a few days. Get yourself ready for it. Read those vows again, and prepare your heart so that you can say those words in all holiness and sincerity.
