Playing the Harlot

"If a person turns to mediums and wizards, playing the harlot after them, I will set my face against that person, and will cut him off from among his people" (Leviticus 20:6).

The Catholic Church has always said that this law of the Old Covenant is a moral, and not merely a ceremonial, law and therefore still abides today. Whether it be tarot cards, astrology, or ouija boards, they are all forbidden. It does not say that you cannot get truth from them; sometimes you can (because demons are able to answer questions!), but that is not the only issue at hand. You are participating with and opening yourself up to demonic influences with these things, so the Lord condemns their practice in the fullest sense.

Notice, however, how the verse speaks of the practice. It says that those who do this are "playing the harlot"; it is a spiritual adultery that they engage in. It is not, however, the medium who is called a spiritual harlot in this passage, but the one who "turns to" the medium. The one seeking the information from these "other spirits" is committing spiritual adultery. Why, you may ask? Because a harlot gives her body for someone else's use. Someone committing spiritual harlotry gives his or her body and soul for the demon's use.

Some think it merely harmless to "have fun" with these things. History shows us clearly that when someone opens themselves up to these evil practices, that their lives always go awry. They may try to disguise it or cover it up; some even say it is just bad luck, but Holy Scripture shows us clearly that these things are not neutral. When you willingly give yourself to a demon, he will joyfully have his way with you (and all he really wants is to destroy your soul). Often when people surrender to demonic influence, they end up falling into many other grave sins as well (like drugs, sodomy, etc.).

The consequences of someone who follows after spirituality without God is demonic attack. They may think that it is some nice "spirit guide" or "alien being", but it is the hounds of hell who are going to tear them down. In today's multicultural chaos, more and more people are seeking something deeper than mere secularism. Let us help to point them to the spirituality of Jesus Christ, and help them steer clear of those things that will lead them on the path to eternal destruction.
