Papal Confusion

A recent convert to the Catholic Church was asked by a friend (who had not converted) how he liked being Catholic, "now that the Pope spouts heresy every single day". To be honest, the Pope does not spout heresy "every single day". We could go so far as to say that the Pope frequently says things that make me scratch my head in wonder. I might even say that I do not know what he means by certain things. To make an accusation like "spouting heresy every day", would require one to know all things.

The recent convert responded with a powerful statement: "I'd rather be a Catholic with Francis as Pope, than not be a Catholic with anyone else as Pope." The point is: it does not matter who the Pope is, nor what he believes, nor how often he causes confusion; if it is right to be Catholic, it is right, regardless of the circumstances.

No one person (that I know of) joins the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church because he believes that her members are perfect. If anyone were to do that, he is in grave error about the nature of the Church and her members. It is not about whether we like the Pope, but whether we are in communion with the Church founded by Christ Jesus. Yes, we may need to respond to the critics regularly, but that does not change the fact of which is the One, True, Church (and it might even help our salvation!).
