He Said What?!

I read an article recently by a non-catholic regarding the Pope's criticisms and restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass. It was somewhat accurate. It was not without, however, a number of misleading details. None of these details were grave errors, per se. Rather they were little turns of phrase or summary statements that were just inaccurate enough to mislead the average reader who is not aware of the facts (or the actual situation in Rome).

For example, the author said that Pope Francis wants to "abolish the Latin Mass". Although that may be true, it is not what he has ever said publicly. Yes, I know all the comments which seem to infer that, but let us make sure that we are treating the Holy Father the way that we want to be treated; and that means not seeking to take his words in the worst way possible! He may very well want that, but we are not supposed to presume we know his mind. What can we infer from his statements about the Traditional Latin Mass? He does not seem to like it; pretty clear. He does not want it in diocesan parishes; also pretty clear. He believes that the communities where it has been practiced have become largely divided; true or not, it is clearly his opinion.

This is all to say that we have to be very careful when we read "news"; especially about things coming out of Rome. It is easy with word choice or one's manner of speaking to make something appear different than it truly is. That article that you believe is telling you about a crucial event in Rome, or a controversial statement by Pope Francis, might not actually be what it appears to be. Whether by intention or not, things can be misconstrued on the internet (they really can!). Realize this, and realize also how many people willingly want to skew the truth; especially the devil. Remember: it is the devil who wants you to hate the Pope; God wants you to love the Pope and pray for him! Who you gonna listen to?
