I have had this thought cross my mind every once in a while. I might even have spoken or written about it before (sorry if I am repeating myself). Let me start with a very direct question: "Does anyone really like the Novus Ordo?" I do not mean "does anyone really like the Mass they experience on a given Sunday in a 'Novus Ordo' parish?" Since the vast majority break at least a few rules of what is supposed to be done, almost no one is ever experiencing the actual "Novus Ordo" as it is supposed to occur.
Those of us who prefer the Divine Worship Mass, the Latin Mass, or one of the Eastern Masses, generally only tolerate the Novus Ordo. When asked, there are many who would say things like, "I would change 'such and such' about the Mass". I can think of a long list of things I would change.
Those who (at least) say that they prefer the Novus Ordo, seem to be constantly tweeking it and changing it. The people ask, "can we do this instead" at the Mass, and the priests are regularly ad-libbing the prayers, skipping certain parts, and adding in things that are not in the rubrics. In other words, they are discontent with the Mass as given and want to change it into something else. Their behavior says that they do not actually like what the Novus Ordo is supposed to be.
I only know of very few people (priests or laity) who truly want to have the Novus Ordo celebrated exactly the way that it is laid out in the rubrics (which does not imply they like it that way, just that they want to be obedient). Everyone seems to want to improve upon it. What does that say? Is there anyone who truly likes it as is? It seems doubtful. Is this essentially a big "vote" against the Novus Ordo, expressing that it is somehow faulty? Hmmmm. Makes one wonder.
